American Eel
The serpent of the riverbed.
Field Notes
ELUSIVE
Hides in rock crevices and murky water. Nocturnal.
Often mistaken for water snakes by panicking tourists, the American Eel is a staple of the Leonida waterways. These slimy, muscular fish inhabit both the freshwater rivers of the Grassrivers and the brackish coastal estuaries.
For anglers, they present a specific challenge. Unlike bass or trout, eels tend to wrap themselves around underwater debris when hooked, requiring a different reeling technique to land successfully without snapping the line.
